Designation: Having received a bequest from the Estate of Ilya Pudlak, the League of Ukrainian Canadians memorialized this donation by creating a designated fund at BCU Foundation. The fund supports projects sponsored by the League of Ukrainian Canadians, including projects that nurture the Ukrainian-Canadian identity and advance information about all aspects of Ukrainian history, particularly Ukraine’s struggle to achieve independence and democracy.
Background: Born in 1916 in the Lviv region of Western Ukraine, Ilya Pudlak came to Canada as a political refugee after the Second World War. He settled in Calgary, Alberta where he was an active member of the Ukrainian- Canadian community. As a long-time member of the League of Ukrainian Canadians, Mr. Pudlak’s intent was to support projects that promote the values of historical truth, a nation’s right to independence, and the fostering of the Ukrainian-Canadian identity.
