Nation Builders Fund
Initial grant: $50,000
Donor: Buduchnist Credit Union and private donors
Designation: The fund was created in 2011 to mark 120 years of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. The fund supports projects and events that celebrate, promote, commemorate, and share the story of the first and second waves of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. For over 120 years, Canada has welcomed successive waves of Ukrainian immigrants.
Background: The first and largest immigration began in 1891. Settling exclusively in Canada’s Prairie region, the Ukrainian pioneers endured great hardships. These 170,000 Ukrainian settlers contributed more to opening up Canada’s western provinces than any other ethnic group.
The second wave of immigrants arrived between 1922 and 1939, after their homeland was re-occupied following the collapse of Ukraine’s National Republic.
The fund supports activities that include scholarly research, publications, conferences, and other initiatives of historical significance that serve to underscore the outstanding contribution made by these early waves of Ukrainian émigrés as Canadian nation builders.
